Culture
The city of Asheville contains a thriving arts, music and performing arts scene that encourages culture. The live music scene is especially well-known in the area, and festivals, numerous nightclubs and performance venues are all sure to please anyone who loves live music.
History
Established in 1784 by Colonel Samuel Davidson, Asheville was originally called "Morristown" and changed its moniker in 1797. While the city itself remained largely untouched during the American Civil War, like much of North Carolina it became part of the Confederacy and was captured by the Union in 1865. While post-Civil War to the present, Asheville's economy was slow, this means that most of the buildings in the area were preserved and still stand today, making it a historian's dream come true.
